Sandi McKinnon

I have worked in Special Educational Needs for 26 years, supporting children and young people with additional needs including Speech and Language Difficulties, Dyslexia, Autism and ADHD. Prior to this I was an English teacher and a Head of Department in a London School.

I started my career as a secondary English teacher. I then specialised in working with children and young people with SEN, in particular Speech Language and Communication Needs and Dyslexia, working in secondary and primary schools as well as specialist settings. I have managed the Speech & Language Service in Coventry and the larger Communication and Interaction Service, which included the Autism Team.  I have worked with ICAN and the Communication Trust and run projects including ‘Secondary Talk’ and ‘Talk About Talk’.

I am particularly interested in co-occurring difficulties and the links between language and literacy development; and language difficulties and SEMH.
